Previously offered privately to clients like Ārepa, Dr Feelgood, Leaderful, Lof and Circularity, and offered in groups within the Academy EX Masters Disruptive Tech program, and guest lectured within the Auckland University MBA program. Now live online with Melissa.
We’re in the Age of Biology.
“While AI dominates headlines, biology is converging with exponential technologies to unlock unprecedented value. It will revolutionize every market in the next 5-10 years” - Singularity University 2025
Bio-based innovations are revolutionizing markets, industries, and the rules of the global economy. If data is the new oil, biology is the new data.
The bio DISRUPT Opportunity
As global markets rapidly price in the cost of Nature, there is huge disruptive opportunity to rewrite the rules on stale, dysfunctional 20th century thinking.
The risk only sits on the balance sheets and P&Ls of those business models to slow to change.
The future of tech innovation isn’t based on artificial building blocks, it’s based on biological ones.
Nature’s Design Thinking Playbook
Nature is the ultimate engineer, innovator and strategist. Nature outperforms human design thinking for efficacy, efficiency, scalability and growth potential. We now have the tools to emulate Nature’s intelligence.
As strategy and innovation converges, playing with Nature’s playbook sets you up to play the bigger game. Human centered design is old school.
If you want to re/design your business, play by the new playbook.

FAQs

The new disruption game is not learning about, but learning from Nature. To leverage Nature’s 3.8 billion years of evolutionary R&D intelligence.
WHY? BECAUSE…
Nature’s design thinking is not just regenerative, it plays at the highest order of functionality. High performance. High efficiency. High tech. Low cost. Low energy. High growth scalability. Which means it makes really good commercial sense.
Nature’s design thinking applies directly to business strategy, innovation and business model design, using hardcoding that’s proven to be robust enough to underwrite the very foundations of life. Which hedges you from risk as global markets price in the true costs of Nature. It also builds your adaptive resilience.
Nature’s playbook lets you leverage the blueprints and working models that have been tried, tested and proven to work, for a really long time. No matter what your challenge is. Which saves you wasting time, effort and money.

The 20th Century business world we live in is not just polluting, it’s incredibly inefficient and often very ineffective. Research show there is a 88%+ innovation gap between how biology designs and how humans design (Vincent and Mann 2011). Which means that there’s massive upside opportunity to radically reinvent how we create products, services, platforms, networks etc.
World Economic Forum estimates it could create US$10 trillion in GDP growth and 395 million new jobs by 2030. But frankly, we think this undersells the potential. Across every sector, cutting edge businesses are showcasing the enormous upside growth potential from creating higher performing, higher efficient and lower energy solutions, let alone less polluting. We really are only at the very beginning of our disruptive evolutionary journey.

When it comes to strategy and innovation, most businesses are playing a “faster, cheaper, newer” digi tech game. Which is great for short-term processing efficiencies, but does little to build deeper value, and runs the risk of gravitating quickly towards competitive parity, and a redundant business model.
Separately, when it comes to thinking about Nature, most businesses are playing a footprint game driven by TNFD and SBTN governance disclosures. They’re reducing their climate emissions, water or plastic use etc. Great! But they haven’t connected their strategy to the science of life. It means that the disruptive impact on their balance sheets and P&Ls will be big, as global markets price in the true cost of Nature.
Despite political rhetoric, global markets are still rapidly pricing in the costs of Nature. In orders of magnitude, the ‘natural capital’ bubble is estimated to be 3x LARGER than the CO2 bubble (Stuchtey et al 2016).
But it’s good news for you, because it means they’re not seeing the opportunity. And that leaves the door wide open for disruptors.

There’s a rapidly emerging global movement of disruptors, innovators, researchers, and cutting-edge businesses. They sit across every sector, and are primarily start ups. They’re re/engineering and re/designing anything from products, services and platforms to business models, value chains and operations. They’re disrupting the shape of global markets, global industries, and the rules of the global economy.
Every step in the bio.t METHOD profiles diverse, cross-sector case studies to showcase what’s possible. For now, check out our Pathway page for a few examples.

There are 4 big things that set the bio.t Disrupt MBA apart from other MBA and business design processes:
It is rooted in the disruptive context of the living world and the lived experience (where all the big opportunities are).
Each step explores and leverages biological patterns of value potential. This is the magic. So you work from Nature’s blueprints, and hardcoded design principles that have been proven to work for 3.8B years (high performance, high efficiency, high scalability, low energy, low polluting).
Each part is intentionally ordered in hierarchical sequence. So you make better strategic decisions on where to play, how to innovate, where to invest your tech, how to position yourself (so i. you avoid the high risk - high churn “faster, cheaper, newer” parity plays, and ii. are way more intentional to avoid wasting your time and money).
Melissa is a specialist in disruptive business transformation, a systems design strategist and biomimicry innovation practitioner. She is a niche specialist in Nature’s disruptive design thinking, playing in the intersection of biomimicry, ecology, ethics and systems. She has 25+ years leading strategic business transformation and innovation. 15 years on the regenerative side. 10 years training exec teams and entrepreneurs on disruption, for good. 4 years deep diving into research, curating 100 years of regenerative disruptive principles of living systems, alongside a U.S. MSc in Biomimicry. Basically she’s done the heavy lifting so you don’t have to.

No! This course is designed to be as accessible as possible. No prior knowledge is required. You don’t have to be a biologist, or even a design thinker, to do this. All you need is an entrepreneurial mindset.
Whilst Melissa has undertaken her Masters in Science in biomimicry, she is a strategic transformation specialist. She’s done all the translation work to make things easy for you. The beauty of using Nature’s design thinking playbook is that it strengthens both your decision making (THINK) and executional performance (DO).
